It's pretty cool to have a marathon back in Oakland after a 25 year absence.

Anyone else signed up for this? Any pointers for a first-time attendee?

I'll be running it alone because my friends failed to grab tickets before it sold out, but am still excited to get out and play in the mud.

Any recommendations for one?

After doing a marathon, I might head back to doing triathlons, so one that also support swimming and cycling would be great.

Cheers,

Anyone run on concrete, or do you stick to asphalt and trails? I'm bored with every route I can find, and there are some good "multi-use" trails around I haven't tried, but I'm hesitant because they are concrete. When I used to have shin splints it made them worse, but I haven't had that problem in a long time.

My fiance insists that I not try it and hurt anything, but I am itching for something new!!

Thankfully a sporting good store was nearby, not the best way to break in new shoes though, had to wonder if this has ever happend to anybody else?

Great injury prevension method!

Hi everyone,

I am a graduate student in physiology and an avid masters swimmer and runner. I’ve delt with various injuries in my life, including a serious bike/car accident last year and I have found a method that is just awesome in terms of optimal treatment and quick return to sports. It’s called the Egoscue Method, you can check out their main website at www.egoscue.com. I’ve also created a group to talk about the method at

tribes.tribe.net/egoscue

If you are interested in learning how to optimally treat your injuries, I welcome you to join! I hope to get Egoscue Method therapists and clients on there as well to talk about specific injuries.

Run on!!!

My best,

Hope you don't mind me starting another thread on this race.

Been doing a bit of surfing, on the web that is lol.
This race caught my eye how bad is it. I've done a hilly 15 mile race in Banbury England set in the chilterns with 4 big hills, wondering if B2B is any worse.

What can you tell me about the race and if i ever decide (and i'm sure i will one day) to come to San Francisco should i come in May and do this race. Not this year though.

What is the weather like in May and all things like that?

Cheers me dears

Break in training. How do I get back?

Hiya. I'm new. I'm training for my first marathon. I trained last year for a race in Feb, but developed some major respiratory problems and had to miss it. I couldn't even walk a mile.

Now I'm training for a re-match in Las Vagas. The problem is I've had a break in my training. My energy has been low and my breathing is acting up. I've got new meds and an inhaler, but I feel the missed time. I'm training by the same schedule (hal higdon) as my friend who is running with me. I was supposed to run 10 for my long run last Sunday, and should run fifteen coming up (this is week 10). My short runs are 4 - 9 miles and my long runs are all 12-20 until I taper.

I've hardly done anything this week. How do I recover my training schedule without hurting myself? Please help.

Also, what is a good strength training schedule to overlap with the marathon training?

Hey Tribers!

Im new to running, in pretty good shape from working out at the gym consistently about 3-5x a week for the past 3 months.I have really never run for longer then two miles. I was a sprinter in high school and so I guess I need to train those slow twitch muscle fibers. I live near the Presidio and would love to find a running partner on my fitness level that is perhaps interested in training for a 5k with me. Late morning runs work best for me. Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Everyone, I am the moderator for Boston or Bust, a tribe that helps to inspire those who wish to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
I am leaving Tribe because I have not had the time to attend to it. If there is anyone out there who would like to take over moderating this tribe please send me a message. This has been a small but committed tribe and the people on it are great. Last year we sent 2 to Boston.
Thanks so much

ankle injury and an upcoming race...

Hi,
I'm new here and glad to have found you!
I'm entered in a race this Sunday -- my first race in 22 years! I only just started running again a few months ago. (It's just a little 8K, but I'm excited about it anyway!)

Last week while running on my favorite trail, I didn't see a rock under some leaves and twisted my ankle. At the time it didn't hurt at all, so of course I continued my run (my best 5 mile time yet!). The next day it hurt, so I iced and elevated it and took ibuprofen. A couple of days later I did a short slow run to test it and that didn't make it any worse. (More ice, elevation & ibuprofen.) Two more days, another run (this time with an elastic brace) and it actually started feeling better. Then I reinjured it last Friday tripping on something under more leaves while out walking the dog and *that* was a killer. (Either autumn is very dangerous or I'm just accident-prone.)

I haven't run since last Friday's tripping incident. Today is Thursday and the race is Sunday. I was planning to run today but it's pouring rain and cold and the trail I run on when I run on weekdays at lunchtime will be slippery with leaves, so I'm avoiding it. My ankle feels almost 100% although it still looks a bit swollen.

Here's the question (finally!):

Is it better to go ahead and run (maybe 3-5 miles) once (tomorrow) before Sunday, or to just lay off and wait for Sunday? Since it isn't a long race and I'm used to 5 mile runs, my actual training isn't an issue, just the state of the ankle. Is it better *for the ankle* to test it first, or to just wait until Sunday?

Thanks! I really appreciate any advice you have.

Jogging Stroller (x-post)

Howdy

I have a multitude of giftcards for BabysRUs which I'd like to use on a jogging stroller - thus I am limited to the brands sold on the BabysRUs website. Any suggestions?

I'm leaning towards the BOB Sport Utility because it's got the knobbies - good for trails, but I'm also considering the BOB Ironman because it's light and **presently** all my running is on paved surfaces.

BRU also sells a few of the Baby Jogger brand strollers. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
alicia

On december 1st at around 7 AM a friend and I will be starting our 500 mile run from San Francisco down PCH. If anyone would like to run with us for some of the first day (any of the latter 13 days) you are absolutely welcome to do so. Just drop me a line and I can get you any necessary information. The first leg is approximately a marathon distance. You can run as much or as little of it as you like. We are simply looking for company. =)

happy trails!

anyone ever race a mile, be it on the road or at the track. I have a mile (road0 race in 5 weeks time and today i start purposely training for it. Not a great deal of time. I didn't think i could do this one because of work now i can.
At this time i'm not even sure what time to really aim for. Suppose i could check some race calculators. well i have.
Thing is i would love a 7 minute mile not fast but have to start somewhere, i did an 8:30 mile in a timetrial some months back but know i could go faster. 8 minutes quite possible.

anyone with any ideas sessions to do etc. I'm trying to pick as many brains as i can

Cheers ;)

I think I should replace my running shoes here soon. Man they stink! (they started in Ohio and went with me to Iraq and back, then to indiana then to bragg) My shoes will have to endure sand, pavement, grass, rain and sweaty feet. I have wide feet and I think NB could be a good choice. Any suggestions? I really can't spend a lot either.

Advice for post-race entertainment?

My work has a group of employees running in a 5k "corporate challenge" two weekends from now. My boss just informed me that she is no longer able to participate in this run and has bestowed upon me the role of "team leader". I was planning on running the race anyway so training is not the problem. The problem is that I usually do my own thing after a run and now I am responsible for thinking of some kind of a "group organized activity" to entertain a bunch of people I don't usually hang out with outside of an office setting.

Normally I would go out and celebrate with a bloody mary (hey--it's a Saturday) but I don't know if my fellow co-workers/runners would consider this "appropriate". What do you all think, any ideas?

BTW-I just joined this tribe. Hi everyone!

NSAIDS and Training

I just found out about this, so I'm putting it out here as a PSA. I cross posted in the Boston or Bust and the Fitness tribe.

Here's the Cliff's notes:

NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and training (especially endurance training) are a very bad combo - retards muscle recovery
www.pinnaclefitness-online.com/Fi...htm

messes with sodium absorption in the intestines, linked to dehydration, hyponatremia and renal failure in endurance training
findarticles.com/p/article..._n13467250

NSAIDS include ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, etc. Basically all the good stuff -- except tylenol is apparently OK.

Does anyone have any input regarding how often one should change shoes. I'm not talking the typical "once every four/five hundred miles" thing that typically applies. If you were going to run between 26 and 45 miles per day for 14 days in a row how often would you change shoes? And does the use of orthotics affect this number of shoe changes? Or would you change the orthotic insert periodically rather than changing shoes all the time?
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this sort of thing because I will need to know pretty soon for a run I'm doing.
thanks.

Running Beginner - Weight issues

Hi there. In an effort to be more healthy and drop weight before a family event this summer, I have decided that running is a new avenue that I would like to try. I have never been a runner - just a walker, swimmer, diver, etc. I played defense on the soccer team growing up - probably because the coach saw me as someone who was not inclined to run.

But this desire to drop weight along with not feeling winded by running to catch MUNI has led me to this road.

So, I am confused. Where do I begin? HOW do I begin? What about the fact that I weight more than I would like to (and yeah, I am not really keen on posting my numbers online)? Advice? Guidance? Anyone been in this situation before? Thanks!

I've been told by my physio, that i overpronate, mainly in my right foot. I've been running regularly for 4 years have i always done this, was always told i was neutral so wore neutral pain having suffered ankle pain in the last week or so saw the physio where she told me.
I have aquired a wobble board, doesn't hurt as much but still can't walk without a little pain so runnings out at the mo.
Any advice any exercises to strengthen the ankle area. I know i have to get new shoes as new shoes contributed to this latest fiasco.

Wow...I am amazed that I am gaing weight instead of dropping the poundage as I train and rack up miles. I haven't changed my diet yet I am gaining weight. I know that developing more muscle would cause weight gain but I have gained 3 pounds in less than one week with no change in diet. I eat a low-fat high-fiber diet with very little processed sugar or food. Any thoughts on this?

I was really hoping to run this race 10 to 15 pounds lighter...so I could go FASTER!!!

Staying healthy and running

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-distance speed skater. I adore this like nuthin' else.

My first love was running. I had to stop for years because the hurdles pulled some muscles in my trail leg hip.

Deep tissue massage fixed that. I'm now running again and I love it. I've run a few 5Ks. I really want to run a half marathon.

Running obviously involves much more pounding than does skating (in which you set your skate down and gli-iiide, set and gli-iiide!). I have heard of long-term runners getting awful injuries up to and including requiring hip replacement.

A friend turned me on to the POSE method of running: www.posetech.com
It seems to make perfect intellectual sense. But when I tried it I actually had much more impact. If I land on the balls of my feet, there's nothing to roll the impact; whereas my heel strikes are light and they roll onto the ball of my foot. Trying this method made an old, healed ankle injury, sore again. Granted, it says it requires about 6 months of practice to really get it down; but I'm not really willing to do that.

What have you found helpful to prevent injury and stay healthy?

Anyone have advice for healing from and avoiding calf and AT strains? I have been trying to rebuild fitness... but it seems if I go over 30 minutes or faster than a shuffle, I just pull something. It's getting frustrating...

2007 Eugene Marathon

25 days left to go until the first Eugene (Oregon) Marathon.

Even though I'm not running it, I can feel it coming. I'm an early morning runner, and I have never seen so many runners in this town before dawn. And it is not only dawn: it's at all times. During the weekends, the Willamette river is lined, up and down, with runners clocking in their long runs. They're carrying water and GU and they're running the course.

It's awesome. I've never thought I would run a marathon in the place I live. I like to make it a big event, travel, see a new place, run a new course if it's going to be the ol' 26.2. But being a part of this excitement, and feeling it build, I might have to run my own town next year.

If anyone is coming over for the Inaugural Eugene Marathon, welcome!

Anyone out there commute to work by running? I occassionally do. I ran the last two days (7 miles, hilly) to work in Portland Oregon becuase we had a minor (major here) snow storm. One of my co-workers Scott, did too. Any suggestions to make it easy? Scott normally leaves clothes at work. I normally carry a small backpack.

I've not really done much running since the Dublin Marathon at the end of October last year.
I love to run but the motivation or the enthusiasm hasn't been there.

So i'm hopefully about to return and have been thinking of setting up my own blog, but entirely to do with running and am looking for suggestions

What can i call my blog? looking for suggestions

Which Blogging site would you recommend? i've seen and looked at some blogs using Blogger and Wordpress, both look good.

Any tips advice when setting up a blog?
layout design etc eg. graphs pictures etc

I may come back and ask more questions but think that will do for now

Anyone use one to compliment their running

I remember reading back years ago in a Bob Glover book about a woman who got injured she was out for a while. But she cross trained using a rowing machine and when she eventually came back running she had no trouble improve her times from before.

Since joining the gym to compliment my running i have started using the rower again its my favourite piece of equipment.

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience using these and what it did to your running.

Might be a silly question but.... (knee brace)

Do you wear a knee brace on the INSIDE, or the OUTSIDE, of running clothes?
I wear stretchy pants to run in, and they're pretty fitted....does the knee brace go over or under those?

I'm just starting up marathon training, and come to find out that my right knee is very unhappy. I've gotten some insoles that are correcting the overpronating that's contributing to the knee thing, but I'm thinking of wearing a knee brace until I can get into the physical therapist/ in for an x-ray next week.

Thanks!!

So what are your goals faster 5K, first Marathon, What ever lets list em and talk

OK I'll go first looking to do a half marathon in under 2 hours my best to date is a 2:04 which I did 2 weeks ago. Planing to do more speed work and lose weight. It's hard to know if I'll achieve my goal. One thing I noticed is if I shorten my stride and quicken my cadence I am faster, but my heart rate goes up. So I'm working on this and seeing if I can adapt to a faster cadence shorter stride.

Targets

Whats a good target for whatever race distance you are training?

There seems to be 2 schools of thought

The first is a slight improvement on your personal best

the other is a huge improvement but more of a long term goal.

What if you are looking long term
What is achieveable?
What is realistic?

Is it wise to pick a big goal you may never get there but you could come close

Ultimately one day i'd like to get under 40 minutes for 10km (current 49:51) a marathon 3 hr 10 (current 5hr 19) lol

I think if you set a big goal and you might not get there but you might get close
But if you set a lower goal you might never reach your true potential

Which is better
I suppose it depends what you want from running

What do you think

i'm am an off an on runner. running for me is the fastest way to get in shape although now that i'm a little bit older i find that i have much more aches and pains than i used to when i was running in my 20s.

so here's my question: I just started running again after a bit of a lag. I have ran 12 out of the last 18 days - usually for 40 minutes or more on the treadmill at a slowish jogging pace. it's been great and i feel so much more energized, but i'm having foot and ankle problems. the top area of my feet are kinda sore. i rested for two days to let the soreness go down and it kinda worked, but when i ran this afternoon, i now feel soreness on my ankles.

should I slow down a little or should i stop complaining and listed to the old adage "no pain no gain."

I'm looking for suggestions for some form of portable music device (radio, ipod, whatever else may work) I can use while running.

I'm a bit technologically-challenged, so something without a ton of bells and whistles would probably be best.

WHat is/are your favorite health/fitness magazine(s) and why?

What can be done to improve on them?

I'm doing a bit of research for my media class and would like to get your opinions/views...

thanks so much!

reinjured 2nd metatarsal stress fracture healing sloooowly

hi there. thanks for taking the time to read this and help out. i'm not a runner but i thought you all might have wisdom to share on this issue.

two summers ago i experienced my first metatarsal stress fracture, while dancing. it was very painful, in my 2nd metatarsal on my right foot. it took about three months to heal (i was in a short leg walker for about six weeks) and i ceased noticing it after that.

then, almost exactly a year after i had first injured it, in almost the exact same way, i reinjured it. the pain was much less intense, but i still used the walker. and now, six months after the reinjury, i am still aware of it and it is still achey from time to time. i feel most of the time like it's 'tender', and often it feels sore -- but it doesn't hurt the way either stress fracture did. it's like the stress fracture has healed but the bone is weak or stressed or something. i've been wearing custom orthotics for about 2.5 months now, and taking daily calcium supplements since the summer.

does anyone have any experience with lengthy healing times for foot bones? what are some techniques i can use to help this weary bone heal? :)

Hi a bit of advise please or a kick up the rear

I have recently changed the hours i work, and working nights, but am having trouble getting my runs in.
I love running but was hoping with this new shift i'd get my runs in in the daylight. I don't know if its the build up to christmas is effecting it.

Basically over the course of two weeks i get 6 days off. I get 5 days off together Fri-tues, then i get the other Sunday off. I know i should get out there otherwise my race times will suffer. i can't have 4 days off running a week now can i.

any advise appreciated

Hi,
I have a pair of orthotics that are now sqeaky. Every step I take I hear a nice loud squeak. They're nearly 10 years old and also in need of a new footbed. Anyone have problems like this? Do I need a new pair or a tune up?

Call of Nature while running

Disclaimer - this is kind of an icky subject, so if you're easily bothered, I apologize.

How do you deal with/prevent that Call of Nature when you're running? My body seems to have an unpleasant habit of deciding it needs to relieve itself while I am running. So, many of my running routes are dictated by what gas stations are along the way, or perhaps a big stand of bushes. It's uncomfortable and embarassing and I haven't figured out a way to avoid it.

It seems to be a little better if I don't go on a run immediately after getting up in the morning, but it seems to happen when I run over the lunch hour as well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am very surprised that when I run outside I can't run more than 12 minutes (I know!!) and this week I went in and said I won't give up and I was able to run for 50 minutes! Probably because I set the pace and it was just awesome!!!! I didn't get tired...

Hello everyone,
I just started a running program and need any words of wisdom, advise, motivation, inspiration, or tips and tricks you could provide.
Also, if you are near the Fox Cities in Wisconsin and wouldn't mind helping to train with a newbie let me know. I'd be interested in having someone look at my form, stride (pronation vs. supination), posture, ect.
Thanks in advance to those who share their knowledge.
Best,
H

I want to train for the Tahoe Rim 50k that is in July 2007. This isn't set in stone. I just want to do an ultra within the next year. The guy that owns American Running Guides is trying to get a training group together for this race, and I would love for this to happen. I would love a partner to run with for the really long runs. Is there any interest here?

Hello all! I've been on this tribe for a littl while and have been running for over two years. Is it me, or are we all a little bit sadistic? I mean.....I posted a thread about me having sciatica and someone said to stop running. Have I? No.....
People ask how they can keep running on injured legs and knees, and we tell each other to REST....but do we?
I am fine knowing that running is my addiction...that and hooping...but at what point to I say..okay, I'm a little bit sadistic and a part of me LIKES the soreness and pain, or else I would stop running. Maybe the feel good part of the endorphins makes it all worth it.
I'm just curious on what your takes are on your approach to running, and pain and pleasure and how they all come together.....
Personally, it's the best, healthiest addictiion I've ever had....but I know I'm a little sadistic. well, maybe more than a little......lol....

running in rain

I am going to travel to rainy country soon - Scotland. I plan to do some running while I'm there, but I have a question for those of you who live in places with weather...

What do you like to wear when you run in the rain?

I live in a very dry state, it's just not an issue here. I'd like to take a few things - stuff is expensive over there. Are we talking full waterproof gear, or water resistant? How much ventilation do you like in a rain jacket? What kind of hat? what kind of shoes?

Thanks for any and all help!

well, i've been a runner for about 4 months. im not crazy, i just do about 3-5 miles a day.

however, 2 weeks ago, i feel (at a party, dancin!) onto my knee. ever since then, around the joint has been swollen. the swelling goes down, i go running, and the next day, its there again. its a mild swell, not one visible to the eye. it just feels like when i bend my knee that the muscles around the knee are tight rubberbands.

i havent ran now for two weeks...only twice. does anyone know how long (in the BEST case scenario) that my knee will need to heal? or what i should do to get back up running again???
HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!

p.s. going to the doc is not really an option right now, thats why i want to be really careful and not run unless it would help to strengthen it.'

ANY RESPONSE IS APPRECIATED!

Sad event at the LA Marathon.

FROM THE LA TIMES

Exuberance of L.A. Marathon Tempered by Runners' Deaths
Two men suffer fatal heart attacks along the 26.2-mile route. Another who collapsed is hospitalized in critical condition.
By Cynthia H. Cho and Sandy Banks, Times Staff Writers
March 20, 2006

The weather was perfect, the field enthusiastic, the times respectable, but Los Angeles' annual street party masquerading as street race was marred Sunday by the deaths of two runners and the collapse of an elderly man who was hospitalized in critical condition.

Two retired law enforcement officers died after collapsing on the route. Det. Raul Reyna, 53, suffered a heart attack at mile 24 near Olympic Boulevard and Westmoreland Avenue, two miles short of the finish line. He died at Good Samaritan Hospital. The 28-year Los Angeles Police Department veteran had worked on the use of force investigation team at Parker Center, officials said.

Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy James Leone, 60, collapsed at mile 3, near Exposition Boulevard and Figueroa Street. "He just dropped … keeled over and hit his face on the pavement," said David Lawson, who interrupted his own run to administer CPR to the fallen runner.

"His face was covered with blood and his eyes were open, but we never really got a pulse," said Lawson, a private pilot who volunteers part time on a ski patrol team. He and another runner, a physician, spent several minutes trying to revive Leone before paramedics arrived, said Lawson, who then resumed his run. Leone was pronounced dead upon arrival at California Hospital Medical Center.

Sheriff's officials said Leone was participating in his 11th L.A. marathon. He was a 26-year member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and had retired in July 2000.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County's coroner's investigation division said Leone, who lived in St. George, Utah, had been under a doctor's care and may have suffered from cardiovascular disease.

He was accompanied to the marathon by his wife and daughter. Marathon officials said this was the second time in the 21-year history of the race that there had been a fatality along the course.

The only other known death during the Los Angeles Marathon came in 1990, when a 59-year-old Altadena man under a doctor's care for hypertension suffered a fatal heart attack while running in the fifth annual race. William McKinney, who had trained for the contest under a physician's care, suffered heart failure at the 21-mile mark near Crenshaw and Pico boulevards.

Just nine blocks into the race Sunday, a third runner, believed to be in his 70s, suffered a heart attack near the intersection of Figueroa and 15th streets. The man, whose name was not released, was taken by paramedics to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition Sunday night.

The tragedies unfolded unnoticed by most runners.

When to retire shoes debate...

As it continues with the general 'after 300-500' miles argument, some also say getting the best from your shoes would be to rotate them with another pair. This allows for the best of what the shoe provides - support, comfort, control, etc.

If you continually running 10 miles a day every day with the same shoe, you're not getting the benefits of what the shoe provides as mentioned above. So rotating a pair or several pairs would be common sense in order to let the shoe 'get back' to the way it was. Some say 48 hrs some say more... Each shoe is different.

But the point of this is this: When do you retire the shoe?

Is it just the shoe company that promotes 300-500 miles so that they can sell more shoes? Could be. So I tried to find some sense of objectivity - a none biased statement.

I myself am aiming for 70 miles for the month of September and what if I get to my ultimate goal (due to time constraints) of 100 miles a month? I'd be buying a new pair every 3-5 months. Although I don't mind buying a new pair of shoes whenever I can, I also realize this is a serious hit on the pocket book for those who run 300 - 500 miles a month!!! Are you one of those?

So here's what I found that may interest those of you who do some serious mileage. It means really inspecting your shoes as well as logging those miles which we all should do - if you're serious about running.

Here's a good unbiased article (i think its unbiased). Tells ya how to check shoes for wear. Stated also that 300-500 is the guage BUT body types and running styles are the true factors of wear and tear.

Hey all! I am racing in a 5k on the 16th and have been running indoors. I need to run outdoors this week so I can get used to the air difference and running with distractions again. Anyone want to come and challenge me up at Lake Hollywood or on a run to the Bowl? My race PR is 29:01, but I want to break 27.

ok...so tonight at track I did 5 x 800m, with 400m rest in between each trial; a 2000m warm up before the first trial and 2000m cool downafter the last trial. I wore my heart rate monitor and noticed that for the first trial, I ran a 3:50 with the starting heart rate at 84, mid point at 155 and ending at 170. The next trial I ran the same speed, 3:50 but the starting heart rate was 144 and the ending rate was 177. How can it be that my time did not get faster and instead remained the same? For my subsequent trials, I was at 3:52, 3:51 and back to 3:50 for the final one. My starting heart rate was always 144-145 and the ending waned from 172 to 174

Greetings all, a couple of questions. I started Spining about five years ago for cross training. To make a long story short, now I'm a certified instructor and finding it's cutting into my running time and concerned I maintain the proper balance of miles and bike as I've got my sights on the St. George marathon the first week of Oct.. What do you all reccomend?

Secondly, I moved here this past Nov. and left my running partner back in D.C., I've yet to find a new one. I'm an early morning runner doing my longest one Sat. morning. Any other St. Georger's out there?

Thanks,
Ralph

I am trying to train for my first marathon and am at the point where I am doing 10 miles on my long run days. I was pumped the first time I did and now that I can do more am loving it. But the only time I don't chafe is if I am wearing to many clothes for comfort in hot weather. I chafe under my arms and inner thighs.
Any suggestions for that? It really ruins a good run.

Help! I think I have sciatica. I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy last year, but now that medication is working, I've been noticing pain from my hips, groin and buttocks that shoot into my legs. I've looked online and think this is sciatica. Are there any suggestions you can give on stretches, excerices, or anything to help with the pain? Physical therapy has made things worse in the past, so I am really apprehensive to see my DR. again. Thanks!!!

Compartmental surgery, whose had it?

Hi yall,
Ive read many runner's comments on compartmental syndrome/shin splints etc, but has anyone gone thru w/ the surgery? I am 21yrs old and just had my right leg operated on last thursday, for compartmental syndrome.
Bouncing back and forth from sport to sport since 6th grade, I started getting shin splints in 10th grade and slowly with each passing year my pain proceeded to get worse. For years I told no one "hey no pain no game", but during a ne-10 playoff game in soccer, the pain caused me to collapse. Had i not been so stubborn and actually told someone, then maybe i could have participated in my team's championship game for the division 2 title. We lost, and I sat and watched from the sideline. At the end of the season I was administered the pressure test in which a thick needle was inserted into my shin before and after exertion was released (they had me run a lap or two outside). If the numbers jump significantly between readings, and if the pressure reading is high enough (20 or higher I believe), then is this "shin splints" like symptoms considered to be an issue.
I was diagnosed this in January and already fitting the qualifications for the surgery. However, my doctor administered 3 months of intensive physical therapy, no running on pavement, and expensive insole archpads for my shoes. I did everything and conditions only got worse. Later on I found out that my doctor had screwed up on a patient with the same diagnosis, which was why he was putting my surgery off. Always get a second opinon.
Anyways, I can share what I've learned about the symptoms, causes, and factors declairing the title of compartmental syndrome. What I don't know is the post-surgery factors. Does anyone know how long the pain persists, when a good time to start running is, and any home rememdies to help numb the pain. Also, if there is anythign that can be done to prevent this from happening in the future. Sorry about this lengthy post, and i appreciate any advice. Thanks again.
